EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH MARLON TEUNISSEN
Q1:What kind of child were you when you were small?
A1: A very silent and dreamy child. I was always daydreaming at any moment of the day. I was not a very social child and I was used to play alone ( I even liked it better that way :P ) I was very good at fantasizing things so I did not needed much to be happy.
Q2: What made you decide to pursue the current career?
A2: Currently I am studying Japanese and do a little freelance work and make manga's as much as I can. (School sometimes takes a lot of free time away from me >_<) maybe after this I would like to study for concept artist or illustrator if possible or needed. I decided to try and get into the art business because...well I always liked drawing a lot but it wasn't until I was about 13/14 years old and played a lot of videogames at that time, that I was getting interested in the game art, character designing and manga world.
Q3: If you are not a full-time artist, what do you do?
A3: Honestly if I can't become a full time artist I would not know what else I would do. For now I just hope to become one and try my best to achieve it.
Q4: What are the best characteristics of your drawing?
A4: People often tell me that each of my drawings often look very different from each other, yet I always seem to be able to maintain my own recognizable style in it so that people always still can tell that it's from me. And also the liveliness of my characters is something very characteristic.
Q5: Which part of your image do you put the best thought into? (Such as facial expression, environment, etc)
A5:
Facial expression and the movement of the bodies are definitely the main parts which I focus mostly on. I think that giving characters emotion is one of the most important factors of art.
Q6: What program and software do you use to create your works?
A6:
When I use the computer for my drawings, I use Photoshop and painter
Q7: Which part of the image do you start with? (Such as face, line, background)
A7: The shape of the head and from there I add the rest of the body, clothes, details and background.
Q8: Do you have any creators you admire?
A8:
A lot hehehe. But my most favourite ones are: daisuke ishiwatari, ayami kojima, tetsuya nomura, mucha, esher, yoshitaka amano and kazusa takashima.
Q9: Where do you get your inspirations from?(Example: from books, TV, etc)
A9: From many things. After watching a nice movie or anime I always feel very inspirational. Same goes for reading nice manga's and books or just walking around on the street or sitting in the train. But I guess music is also a very important source of inspiration for me.
Q10: Do you have a goal in terms of creating works?
A10:
I want to make people excited and happy with each drawing I finished and feel proud of it.
Q11: Do you like animals? If so, what is your favorite?
A11: I love them all except spiders and other insects that look like them. Of all animals I must say that dogs are my favourite...especially the Irish setter.
Q12: How do you spend your weekends?
A12: When I have no homework I spend it drawing, internetting and playing videogames.
Q13: Do you have any sites you check everyday?
A13: Yes. I always visit all my online art galleries including my own website (and I have a lot) like cgtalk, and deviantart. And also like to browse on artist websites.
Q14: What is your hobby other than drawing?
A14:
Videogames. I also love to listen to music a lot.
Q15: Is there any current project you are working on? Please let us know!
A15:
At the moment I am working on a manga for a publisher and some own manga projects. Plus some art for a pc game.
Q16: Message to Japanese creators
A16: Keep making more great art and stories as you have done for all these years. They are really unique and very inspirational!
Q17: Would you accept work from Japan?
A17: Now that answer shouldn't be hard. Absolutely! Once I finish my Japanese study, communication with Japanese people will be easier for me so who knows...
