ABOUT THE CREATOR

2-2-1 is the penname of the sixteen year-old Nga Thi Thuy Tran from Netherland. 2-2-1 uses Water color as her main medium. Even only 16 years old, her art expression and style are pretty matured. Her arts have the theme of somewhat grotesque and erotic. We look forward to her future development in art style.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH NGA THI THUY TRAN (2-2-1)

Q1:What kind of child were you when you were small?
A1: I'm still a kid, but I was very boy-like. I enjoyed picking fights with male classmates. But I also had to big a sense of justice, which caused me to be unable to bond with my classmates. I didn't really start drawing until about... four years ago?

Q2: What made you decide to pursue the current career?
A2: Outside of the fact that I really do enjoy drawing, I don't have the talent or skills for anything else... So it was a obvious choice, I guess. I also want pursue art because I think it is important to be able to express one's self. I try to convey a message that is similar to "Super Flat".

Q3: If you are not a full-time artist, what do you do?
A3: I'm not a full-time artist... I'm still in High School! But if it weren't for art, I'd probably be a cook. I love food!

Q4: What are the best characteristics of your drawing?
A4: Somebody once told me my drawing looked as if it was drawn on water. But what I like best about my own art is that it looks strangely....erotic?

Q5: Which part of your image do you put the best thought into? (Such as facial expression, environment, etc)
A5: Most of the time, I put most work into a character's body. It should be a bit meat-y!

Q6: What program and software do you use to create your works?
A6: I mostly work with traditional watercolors. But I'm also practicing CG. For CG, I use OpenCancas 3.

Q7: Is there any project you are currently working on? If so, please let us know!
A7: Currently, I am in a small circle... so I'm trying to do a full color comic for our first book. But I'm horrible when it comes to comics. I try to do every panel perfectly, but I don't have the energy for that. I wish I had someome to tutor me when it comes to art and comics!

Q8: Do you have any creators you admire?
A8: Too many!! But I've admired Benkyo Tamaoki for a long time now. I think Takayoshi Sato, Ito Masahiro, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Francis Bacon are also artists that, to me are influential.

Q9: Where do you get your inspirations from?(Example: from books, TV, etc)
A9: Music! Sonic Youth and AIR are especially bands I listen to for imagery. I also look at plant and insect encyclopdiaエs for concepts.

Q10: Do you have a goal in terms of creating works?
A10: Expression of self is the most important for me... but I still have ways to go. I want to improve on expression, but also I want to learn how to tell a "story" through comics...

Q11: Do you like animals? If so, what is your favorite?
A11: My favourite animal...the badger? I don't know. I like plants and insects more.

Q12: How do you spend your weekends?
A12: Sleeping. And cooking up desserts. Good thing I don't eat to much...

Q13: Do you have any sites you check everyday?
A13: I check my Livejournal everyday... and the auctions on Yahoo!Japan.

Q14: What is your hobby other than drawing?
A14: Reading and watching movies.

Q15: Message to Japanese creators
A15: I would like for Japanese doujinshi artists to make (many?) more unique works.

Q16: Would you accept work from Japan?
A16: Most certainly. But currently, I don't even have work in the west! I'm still a kid, I guess...So for those who like my illustrations and paintings, please consider giving me work.

Thank you 2-2-1 for answering the interview! Check out her website to learn more about her works.
