About United Publications and Distribution Ltd
United Publications are a UK based manga and anime mail order and online distributor. They have been going strong since 1994 and currently offer an extremely impressive and varied range of titles for the UK based manga, anime and fantasy. Covering all genres of manga and anime United Publications offer a wide choice for fans of all corners of the market.
Q1: I see you have been around since 1994 - have you seen the market change in that time?
A1: Yes one of these area is the Shojo & Yaoi market, which I've known from Japanese fans that we help for a while.
But over the past 2 years it's been getting more popular and making the female fans/customers stand out better as a market for publishers to support.
Q2: In terms of your sales how do yaoi/shonen-ai/BL titles fair?
A2: With some titles almost as popular as regular manga
Q3: You have an impressive range of the harder to acquire yaoi titles from publishers such as Be Beautiful.
How popular are these manga?
A3: Popular as regular manga, with the range of titles and publishers growing.
Q3: What message does this give us about the Japanese yaoi market and the future of the English-speaking one?
A3: Publishing is a risky business no matter what side of the ocean you're on. However, there's a clear demand for BL material, and there's still a lot of space in both markets to meet that demand. We hope to continue to take advantage of that. :-)
Q3: Where do you display your more adult yaoi titles within your store? - ie do they have their own shelf space etc.
QA: We are mail order only and all titles are listed by publisher or given same space when listed as new. We mark most Yaoi titles adult, but shonen/shojo normally are not graphic (i.e. nude scenes or sex) enough for us to worry about marking them adult.
Q4: The Japanese publishers Biblos announced bankrupcy recently - publishers of titles such as The Target in the Finder, Ayano Yamane. Has this affected your company or your suppliers? If not do you anticipate it to?
A4:
Not sure this has effected the US publishers of these titles, but publishers often under print titles, not sure they know just how popular some titles are.
