Exclusive Interview with Jason Ibarra
Jason Ibarra is a talented illustrator as well as a comic writer. He is also a pretty humorous person and deep thinker....as you can feel from this interview :)
Q1: What kind of child were you when you were small?
A1: Ha - mostly what I remember is sitting at my easel painting or drawing with crayons・all day long! Other
then that, I liked to read everything I could get my
hands on, regardless of if I understood it or not. I
loved science books the best, which is amusing
considering I now hate science outside of Biology.
Actually, I hate Biology. It makes me hungry.

Q2: What made you decide to pursue the current career?
A2: Well, I'm still a student in school right now. I study
at the Savannah College of Art and Design, although
I'm in the middle of a year break from my studies. I'm
a sophomore. I went to school originally to become a
graphic designer and 3d animator, but all of that
changed when I started to get into manga and anime. I
read and enjoyed American comics when I was young, and
always secretly wanted to become a comic artist. So, I
decided o follow my dreams and attempt to become a
manga artist. My current major is Sequential Art.
Q3: If you are not full-time artist, what do you do?
A3: I enjoy music very much. If I wasn't so into drawing,
I would've gone to a conservatory to become a
professional musician. I studied piano when I was
young as well as percussion and trumpet, but currently
pretty much only play guitar (I'm a clich'n idiot). I
also enjoy cooking and reading, and laughing idly.
Q4: What are the best characteristics of your drawing?
A4:
I'm a really depressed and alone, and when people
praise my artwork, I mostly ignore them due to my
innate belief that my art is horrible. However, I see
many of my peers trapping themselves in a specific
style, technique, or medium. I like to spread out my
artistic sensibilities and keep things fresh and
minty. Which is an odd way of saying I keep involved
in many different mediums and techniques.
Q5: Which part of your image do you put the best
thought into? (Such as facial expression, environment
etc)
A5: By the time I complete an image, I've devoted equal
amounts of attention to pretty much everything.
Although this goes in stages - such as moving from a
composition into color theory or whatever. But I'm
really concerned with my style these days. I'm
obsessive over how I draw faces and handle anatomy to
an unhealthy degree.
Q6: What program and software do you use to create
your works?
A6: I used to use Painter, but I ditched it recently for
Photoshop 7. I use a small cheap wacom graphire
tablet, because I break bigger and more expensive
tablets regularly. And I use a lot of traditional
mediums.
Q7: Which part of the image do you start with? (Such
as face line, background, etc)
A7: It will always begin with a very loose anatomical
sketch. I'll start with the head, and move on from
there very quickly.
Q8: Do you have any creators you admire?
A8: In the way of films, I admire Bergman, Hideaki Anno
and Takashi Miike. I love Tatsuyuki Tanaka's
illustrative works and Yoshiyuki Sadomoto痴 character
designs. My favorite manga artists are Kentaro Miura,
Junji Ito, Usumaru Furuya and Fuyumi Soryo. My
favorite American comic artist is Bill Watterson. And
I have a million other artists I love.
Q9: Where do you get your inspirations from? (Example:
from books, TV, etc)
A9: I like to approach rendering of the human form from a
classical standpoint. Michelangelo continues to
inspire me greatly. Gainax (the Japanese animation
studio) continues to inspire me through the way they
handle character development and their awesome
artwork. Other then that, I am greatly inspired by a
bunch of Shoujo artists.
Q10: Do you have a goal in terms of creating works?
A10: The only goal I set in my mind is to set free whatever
I can't wrap my head around at the moment. Whether it
be stress, frustration with life, or whatever, art
allows me to transcend my troubles and think of other
things.
Q11: Do you like any animals?
A11: Yeah, I'm a pet lover. Due to my parents I haven't been able to live with animals for too long, but I
love cats, dogs, birds and lizards. My favorite animal
in the world is the elusive Pink Turtle.
Q12: How do you spend your weekends?
A12: Drawing. Oh yeah, I have friends, too. I go out and
eat places and wander through forests at night and go
to conventions and stuff. And play too many video
games. And sometimes women enter my life and make
things miserable for me.
Q13: Do you have any sites you check everyday?
A13:
http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/mainscreen.html
(best online digital art forum EVER), www.deviantart.com,
www.4chan.org.
Q14: What is your hobby other than drawing?
A14: Composing, performing music, singing and cooking,
waltzing.
Q15: Message to Japanese creators
A15: Would you marry me?
Q16: Would you accept work offer from Japan?
A16: Yes. I hate this place and would so love to go to
Japan. And be ostracized. But that'll be alright as
long as I could make money, and I could pretend to be
a Canadian or European. I could drink lots of kool-aid
so that my skin turns red, and then no one would be
able to accurately tell what ethnicity I was.
