Today is the birthday of Akibaangels.com's mascot characters, "Three Angels"!
We are very excited that Nagi Kazekawa (Featured here in August) has designed mascot characters for akibaangels.com, and was kind enough to introduce the step by step procedure on how he created these adorable characters!
First, to get your image started, draw rough sketch. This can be messy because this is to get your imagination going.
(My rough image is always this messy)
After getting some ideas from rough image, next start illustrating detailed parts such as accessories and cloth.
Since these are mascot characters for "Akiba Angels", I used the common feature to all these characters, which are wings and stars. (Neko-mimi (Cat Ears) is my preference lol)
After drawing the base, create the final line by using trace box.
I use 0.2 sharp pencil to draw clean and thin line.
0.2 pencil is rarely being sold, so I always have hard time finding it. |

After completing the line art, take it into PC.
After clarifying the lines with Photoshop's level function, refine the lines even more. Taking darts around them.
Create a layor under the line art.
Paint the area overwrapping with the characters in white.
By doing this, you can easily correct the area that are coming out of line, when you color.
Ok, line art is done. Pre-production is ready. |
Now, we paint the characters.
I like using Painter because of it's texture looks.
Make different layers for each parts such as skin, hair, etc.
Don't worry about going out of the borders. Just paint the area.

While I was painting, I felt like something was missing. So I added sleeves and belt.
Many things look differently when it goes on monitor, and you notice them for the first time.
You can add any parts that you think it is appropriate.
Once you have completed the whole area, use Photoshop to erase the areas where the color is going out of the border.
You can also use multiple layers to make the shade thicker. You can also use "Burning" tool to create high lights on cheeks, eyes, hair etc.
I love putting highlights because it makes characters look more lively.
After completing the coloring, use color balance function to adjust the color.
This work will be very efficient if you create many layers ahead of time.
Complete each character by following above procedures.
