AKIBA ANGELS CHARACTER DESIGN:
Nagi Kazekawa

Because of many requests, we have asked Toma to provide Akiba Angels an exclusive illustration as well as making of the painting.
Toma's drawing technique is brilliant, but has been kept unknown because she never opened her technique to public. We are proud to open Toma's tutorial for the first time. [In Japanese]

1. Draw a rough image on a paper, then scan it. After opening it on Photoshop, use contrast to make lines clear. I currently use Photoshop 7.0.
I will be painting over the image according to this line structure.

2. Lay basic colors.
I like the idea of white skin color growing in dark sun set environment.
Therefore, I use dark gradation in the background.

3. I lay lighting effect and make rough color balance decisions by using soft light and overlay. After this process, make all layers into one.

4. First, I begin from the face.
When I get satisfied with the way character's face looks, I feel that everything will go smoothly.
Use Blush to color the whole image.
When coloring in detail, I either raise the clearness or use sharper blush, but basically I use blush tool all the time.

5. I choose Neko-Mimi (Cat ear) because Akiba Angels' mascot characters have them.
How I draw character's eyes depends on how I feel at that time, but I love double eye-lids that give a solid impression.
I try to match the eye brow and hair color so that they look balanced with the skin color. At this process, I always feel like I am putting a make up to the character.

Character's face always tend to change as I keep working on.
In this case, this is it for now.

6. Painting the character's body.
I like the contrast of while skin against the background. I color the skin roughly, and work in detail later on.
I also come up with the cloth detail while I am coloring.

7. I started to think the red is too strong, therefore I used Color balance tool to make blue stronger.

I imagined a cat girl by a lake. Tail also grew out of the character.
It is a lake right after the sun set.
Use bold blush and paint the sky. Use Brightness balance tool to adjust slight color balance.

I choose Gothic Lolita cloth with races for this character, but tried not to have too strong focus on the cloth.

Oh, and the face somehow got changed slightly.

8. Here is the final face.
It looks cleaner.

9. Zoom into the sky and color the details.

Added a shadown under her tail.
At this point, I am still working on the lighting reflection and its balance.

I was not quite satisfied with her pose, therefore I changed her hand gesture.
Adjust blush type to paint over the steel part.
By using overlay , gradually lay light purple over the water surface.
I like the water surface to have a clear dark and light contrast.

Finally, color the hair and background mountain.
