Hentai Guide vol.1
Years ago, if you brought up "hentai" to Westerners, most would treat you like a pedophile with animal
fetishes. Many years have passed since the anime fandom showered over the West. How is hentai doing nowadays? Let's start with a history lesson.
In Kamen Rider Black RX, our hero defeated monsters by impaling them with a saber. In the U.S., RX fired beams at villains instead. The Western audience disliked the idea of letting kids see monsters being stabbed. This is how conservative Western countries are compared to Japan.
Hentai? Don't even say the word. In most licensed anime, if the episode involves girls in swimsuits, off air it goes. Examples include Sailormoon episode twenty and Pokemon episode eighteen.
In licensed anime, scenes related to Japanese culture also faced elimination. During a Pokemon episode, Brock made some sushi for his friends. So, why did he call them donuts? They were obviously sushi. Many dubbing companies avoid Eastern cultural references. Well, hentai is a Japanese culture, so companies omitted them as well.
How about Sailor Neptune and Uranus? In the U.S., they transformed from lesbians to cousins. A bigger transformation than their lipsticks could ever give. If the West excluded homosexual relationships, yaoi stood no chance.
